Glaziers

Glaziers include windows, doors, porches and conservatories.

Glaziers install windows and mirrors in homes and other buildings. They may install new glass or repair broken panes. When possible, glaziers cut glass in the shop rather than at the job site. They start by choosing double glazing glass that meets the needs of the task. For example, they might choose thicker, stronger glass for a shower door than for a window. Glaziers put uncut glass on a cutting table and measure the cutting line. They use a glass-cutting tool with a hard wheel to mark the cutting line. By pressing the cutter's wheel firmly on the glass, glaziers cut into the surface of the glass. This process is known as "scoring" the surface. By pressing on the shorter end of the glass, glaziers break it along the score line. Once the glass is cut, glaziers may cut and apply anti-glare film to reduce glare. Glaziers may not cut all of their glass. Sometimes they order pre-made windows. For these items, glass is cut at a factory and installed in a frame before it is sent to glaziers.
