Loft Conversions

Converting your loft is one of the cheapest, easiest and efficient methods of renovating your house to increase the living space in your house.

Converting your attic is a cost effective method of extending your home. Another benefit of a loft conversion is that it increases value to the house. It is always a good desicion before going ahead with the building work that you get advise off either an Architect, Surveyor and/or Structural Engineer. You still need to gain planning applications from the local council and the construction of the existing roof will be a major factor of whether or not a loft conversion is achievable to gain extra living space.

  • Open Question: Is it possible to get a grant for a loft conversion for my Autistic son, in the UK?

We live in a 2 bedroomed house, which we own. Our children are 6 and 7, boy and girl. It is getting very difficult having them sharing a room due to my sons difficulties. Also our daughter has bowel problems which make her soil herself, so she also needs her own space. I am also disabled and unable to work, which means we cannot afford to take on any more debt. Moving would be a huge upheaval for my son, and could be very detrimental to his wellbeing. I know there are grants available for adaptions etc, but we don't seem to fit into any of the categories for thw work we need.

  • Voting Question: Loft Conversion!!!!?

Im building an ashlar wall to support a purlin that I am putting in place of the existing one...? Does Building Regs require the purlin to be birdsmouthed in to each rafter or can I just rip a piece of 6x2 all the way down the length at the same pitch as the rafters? Thanks roddy but no help at all, I don't really want your suggestions I want to know what building regs are....A birdsmouth is always cut into the rafter, I'm aware of that, It wouldn't be a birdsmouth in the purlin it would just be a notch...which I wasn't suggesting
