Plasterboard Ceilings

Plasterboard started to be used for ceilings around the mid 1960s.

Plasterboard for plastering is basically Gypsum plaster, sandwiched between two sheets of paper. Two coats of finishing plaster are applied and flattened out to a smooth finish, leaving the surface ready for decorating and plasterboard ceilings.

  • Resolved Question: Can i plaster on damaged plasterboard?

We're removing artex as our ceiling is a mess and, in removing the artex I have damaged the plasterboard quite a bit. The boards themselves are still secure but I've managed to gouge out chunks here and there; frankly never realised the stuff was so fragile. I didn't think it would be too much of a problem as I figure plaster is meant to sort out all the flaws in the surface, but I read somewhere that plastering onto a bard that's had the paper layer damaged can cause bubbling? Is this true. As you can probably tell, I'm fairly new to DIY and it's proving a steep learning curve (pretty enjoyable one though!)

  • Resolved Question: How much will a plasterer charge for?

Plastering three walls -bare brick at the moment with chimney breast on one wall. Fourth wall needs to be plasterboarded and skimmed. Ceiling is not required as its fine. Room is 3m x 3m. Yes there is a window and a door but I'm just looking for a rough guide. Materials and labour. I no the brick will take a render first before plastering.

  • Resolved Question: After applying white mist coat, why is it so hard so apply full white coat?

We applied a mist coat roughly across the whole wall and ceiling of a new plaster-finish. However we decided not to use a coloured top paint but simply more of the same matt-white (un-diluted) for the top coat. Why is it so difficult to simply paint over it to get an even white top coat? It seems to keep remaining unevenly-coated no matter how many additional layers of white we add? Why is this and how can we solve this problem?

  • Resolved Question: Have a bit of a dip in repair plasterboard I put up, how to polyfill and measuring coving?

I put a piece of plasterboard in the corner of a room I am doing a repair job , one end is below the original ceiling depth, but the other end is slightly over, and the lady spotted it however her daughter couldn't see it, should I have chiseled or cut away the wood or whatever it is wedged under so it went up a bit higher? Anyway, is is done now. When putting polyfiller into coving (in the corner- slight gap, where the end butts up against the original pieces and some small holes in the top of the coving- how do you put it on? I finally got my coving up, back it took forever. It just would fit right, I scrapped away at the plaster behind where it was supposed to go to make it fit. I made both lengths longer than I knew they had to be then used that plasterboard grater thing to slowly trim it down. The first time I did it I must have done it too much as it was too short. How do you get the measurements without all this faffing around?

  • Resolved Question: Putting plaster up thinly on a plasterboards?

I have done a course on this so so somethings. I have nailed a piece of plasterboard onto my gran's garage beams (outside but rain protected) and want to try and practice plastersing using the pre-made stuff which comes in a tub. This stuff any good? Also for ceilings, do you need to glue the plasterboard first? I heard put PVA glue and water mix on the plasterboard before putting the plaster on, true? By the way, when the plastering is done you then put the coving up, right? Not before?
